Arizona Wilderness

Backpacking & Mountain Biking

The Superstition Wilderness

This Wilderness was designated in 1939, and contains approximately 160,200 acres. A part of America's most diverse desert ecosystem, the Sonoran Desert, the Superstition Wilderness contains countless trails along lush and rugged mountains and haunting canyons surrounded by steep, vertical terrain.

Elevations range from approximately 2,000 feet on the western boundary to 6,265 feet on Mound Mountain. Weaver's Needle, a dramatic volcanic plug, rises to 4,553 feet.

The area's earliest known inhabitants, the hardy Hohokam and Salados peoples, established small villages and cliff dwellings between 800 and 1400 a.d.

Hiking in the Superstitions is a varied and incredible experience with lush riparian hideaways, exotic vegetation, dramatic vistas, and rich legends.

This is wild Arizona.

Superstition Wilderness trips can be combined with scenic Kayaking and back roadsMountain Biking for a complete multi-sport vacation. High Sonoran can accommodate groups from two to twenty five in comfortable wilderness camps or hotel lodging.

Our trip was GREAT! It was really the experience of a lifetime! Both Greg and Terry were excellent guides and great people to spend time with. The experience of hiking with an archeologist was an extra, unexpected bonus- Greg supplied us with a ton of information on the geology and it really added an extra dimension to our hike. Thank you for setting up our camp site and making all the arrangements. We couldn't have had a better vacation! - Cindy Corona

I was *so* disappointed when our conference participants bailed out of hiking. However, joining the river kayaking group proved to be an excellent alternative. Thanks to all for providing an absolutely wonderful adventure down the Salt River... a new kayaking enthusiast has been born. Next time, I'll hike up Camelback in the wee hours of the morn and dance among the angels of the desert. - Lori Moffitt Selman

Hi Nan as promised I checked out your web site, most impressive. But not as good as the real thing. Thanks for making my visit to Phoenix unforgettable. Regards the guy who "......" off the snake after you did on Friday.

To anyone reading this and wanting advice/comments on a trip , believe me you can't go wrong with Denny Carr and the crew of High Sonoran... Friends and I had the best experience with them..in fact we're going again..
